Actionable things you can do now as a Small Business!

You may be spinning your wheels and wondering what can I do as a small business to survive this period of the unknown. Thankfully the government have come out with support for small business, but what are you going to do until June? There are SO many things you can do as a business and I have some tips to get you started.

  1. Work on your social media. You don’t have to post everyday, you just have to be consistent and timely. Now more than ever, people are on social media more to escape or to find entertainment or to learn something. Make sure the back and front end of your social media is 100% optimised and filled out.

  2. Show up on your Instagram and Facebook stories every day. Even just with an update, or a funny story, or promote something. People are watching stories so much more now and its time to ease yourself into being comfortable with documenting on them.

  3. On that note, why not start an IGTV/Youtube channel? What skills do you have that you can teach others? i have seen hair salons do hair tutorials, artists showing their skills, musicians giving free concerts, you name it! What is something that you can talk in depth about and inform or entertain people with?

  4. Start writing blog posts! Again people are on their phones, looking to inform and entertain. You can see what people want to hear about in your industry by visiting Answer The Public and typing in ‘hair salon’ or ‘photography’. Then you can find what people have been searching for and answer their question in a blog post. You get three free searches a day.

  5. Pivot your business so you can either sell or market yourself effectively. One perfect example is of a nail salon selling kits to take off acrylic or gel nails at home safely and providing videos. Another one I have just seen is making up goody bags to sell at a reduced rate. What can you sell or promote during this time to bring in sales?

  6. Sell gift cards for your business! This way you get a cash flow coming in and this means you will have clients in when you are open for business again. Squarespace (nonspon) are offering their Gift Card feature for free until September and the Gift Cards never expire!

  7. Start a Patreon! I have a client who is a photographer who is offering different tiers of expertise through her Patreon and one on one times with her to hone your skills. Great idea!

This is by no means an exhaustive list, but it’s one to start your ideas flowing and making sure you are visible in this time as a business and people can support you.
